5 Essential Supplements to Support Your Nervous System
(Science Backed)
In a world that moves too fast, our nervous systems are often over-worked. Fatigue, anxiety, and poor sleep are signs the body’s electrical web is asking for nourishment.
Alongside rest, breath, and gentle movement, these five supplements—backed by science—can help restore steadiness from within.
I don’t know about you, but I’ll take all the help I can get.
Let’s have at it:

1. Magnesium
Nature's nervous system balm
Magnesium relaxes muscles, calms the mind, and supports deep sleep. Most of us are low in it. Magnesium glycinate or threonate are well-absorbed forms that ease tension without upsetting digestion.
What the science says:
A systematic review found that magnesium supplementation showed benefits for anxiety and nervous-system regulation.
2. B Vitamins
Especially B6, B9 (folate), and B12
The B viteys are vital for nerve repair and neurotransmitter balance. They convert food into steady energy and help regulate mood. A high-quality B-complex supports resilience under stress.
What the science says:
The neurotropic combination of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 enhanced neural cell maturation and connectivity compared to individual B vitamins.
3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Support brain function
Found in fish oil, algae oil, and flax, omega-3s reduce inflammation and support brain and nerve function. They’re essential for focus, calm, and emotional stability.
What the science says:
Biochemical evidence shows n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids play a role in neural structure and function, synaptic transmission, and nerve-cell membrane health.
4. L-Theanine
Encourage alpha brain waves
This amino acid, found naturally in green tea, smooths anxiety without sedation. It encourages alpha brain waves—the same state created by meditation—promoting alert calm.
What the science says:
A randomized controlled trial found that four weeks of L-theanine administration in healthy adults reduced stress-related symptoms and improved cognitive function.
5. Adaptogens
The mood stabilizers
Ashwagandha, rhodiola, and holy basil help the body adapt to stress. They balance cortisol, ease fatigue, and stabilize mood over time.
What the science says:
A review noted that adaptogens have neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, anxiolytic and CNS-stimulating activity; they act via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and stress-response mediators.
Finally: Go easy on yourself.
Emotional regulation and nervous system soothing take daily effort.
True nervous system healing isn’t instant. It unfolds through nourishment, rhythm, and rest. Supplements can help—but the real medicine is learning to live in a way your body can trust.
Incorporate your favorite nervous system activities into daily life — whether it’s yoga, dancing, walking in nature, sipping matcha, or snuggling up to read under your favorite blanket.
Slowly build a life you love, be willing to go a little slower, and remember to give yourself grace.
With love,

Great post! I keep forgetting about the B vitamins. Saffron flower has become a good friend of mine. On really bad days, I’ll add l-theanine. It helped me get through end of life things.
